چکیده
Abstract. We present a method for estimating fossil fuel methane emissions using observations of and ethane, accounting uncertainty in their emission ratio. The ethane:methane ratio is incorporated as spatially temporally variable parameter Bayesian model, with its own prior distribution uncertainty. find that an mitigates bias from fixed, potentially incorrect this propagated into posterior estimates emissions. A synthetic data test used to show the impact assuming demonstrate how our model can better quantify overall also use estimate UK high-frequency ethane Deriving Emissions linked Climate Change (DECC) network. Using joint methane–ethane inverse we annual mean approximately 0.27 (95 % interval 0.26–0.29) Tg yr−1 sources 2.06 (1.99–2.15) non-fossil sources, during period 2015–2019. Uncertainties are reduced on average by 15 up 35 when incorporating comparison results methane-only inversion.

Impact of fossil fuel emissions on atmospheric radiocarbon and various applications of radiocarbon over this century.
Radiocarbon analyses are commonly used in a broad range of fields, including earth science, archaeology, forgery detection, isotope forensics, and physiology. Many applications are sensitive to the radiocarbon ((14)C) content of atmospheric CO2, which has varied since 1890 as a result of nuclear weapons testing, fossil fuel emissions, and CO2 cycling between atmospheric, oceanic, and terrestria...
متن کاملSensitivity of atmospheric CO2 inversions to seasonal and interannual variations in fossil fuel emissions
[1] Estimates of fossil fuel CO2 are a critical component in atmospheric CO2 inversions. Rather than solving for this portion of the atmospheric CO2 budget, inversions typically include estimates of fossil fuel CO2 as a known quantity. However, this assumption may not be appropriate, particularly as inversions continue to solve for fluxes at reduced space and timescales. In this study, two diff...

متن کاملRelation between Fossil Fuel Trace Gas Emissions and Satellite Observations of Nocturnal Lighting
The vast majority of the world's fossil fuel trace gas emission sources can be detected and mapped using nighttime low light imaging data from the U.S. Air Force Defense Meteorological Satellite Program (DMSP) Operational Linescan System (OLS). This includes human settlements, industrial and commercial facilities, and gas flares. Nocturnal lighting could be regarded as one of the defining featu...
